The daughter of a state department employee, Kathleen Rainey spent the first 18 years of her life in Japan, Taiwan, India, Vietnam, Greece and Ethopia.
She moved to the US to get her degree and then to Panama, where she began a career in technology and met her husband Thomas. She returned to the US in 1987 and had a highly successful career in the banking and insurance sector working on both the technology and business sides. She spearheaded the setting up of a subsidiary in Japan for her company. This was followed by several pivotal roles in Information Systems Development in entering various markets including Malaysia, Taiwan and the Netherlands.
Kathy joined Wal-Mart in 2002 and changed her focus to the retail sector. As Director of Associate Information Systems, she handles support for Payroll, Human Resources, Benefits, Retirement Saving etc. Wal-Mart processes the biggest payroll in the US - for about 1.2 million associates.
Of Asian women in the corporate sector, she says that some times we work too hard. She advises not to hesitate to show one's human side, and to have good mentors. Kathy herself is actively involved in mentoring programs at Wal-Mart. She is also a Dale Carnegie Award Winner.
