The 2010 AWIB Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference

The 2010 AWIB Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference for Minority/Women-Owned Business Enterprises was held on Thursday, May 13th at BNY Mellon.  It was a successful event that offered business owners a plethora of information and extensive networking opportunities. With a combination of nearly 50 government agencies and corporations participating, business owners were able to learn the necessary skills to grow their business.

After opening remarks by AWIB’s President, Bonnie Wong, the day began with the keynote speaker,
Pravina Raghavan, NY District Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration followed by a few brief Q & A session.

Four workshops, “Selling to the Federal Government,” “Opportunities with Regional Authorities and New Jersey,” “Winning Contracts in New York, the State and the City” and “Doing Business with Corporate America” altogether gave a holistic overview of the procurement opportunities available to business owners. Simultaneously, during the workshops, participants networked with exhibitors and pre-qualified participants had private one-on-one corporate matchmaking meetings.

Following the procurement conference, one participant stated:  “It was one of the most successful events I have been to in years, with incredible networking opportunities.”

Conference Benefits and Highlights:
  • Corporate Procurement
Getting your foot in the door—participants heard from the experts on the best approach and ways to close a deal and how you can improve your chances for closing a deal.
  • Corporate Matchmaking
One-on-one meetings for pre-qualified vendors with buyers from corporation, and offered a chance for business owners to pitch a product/service.
  • Government Procurement
Attendees learned how to land a coveted government contract and heard from
New York City, the states of New York and New Jersey and various regional authorities and federal agencies. This was especially informative for minority or woman owned businesses who are certified or need to become certified; and how to leverage it to maximize your business.
