2010 marked AWIB’s 15th successful year (crystal anniversary) of helping Asian women achieve their entrepreneurial goals and advance professionally in their chosen fields.  From seminars on how to start a business, to corporate leadership development, AWIB members and supporters enjoyed a variety of networking events and learning experiences geared towards helping them develop new skills, meet the right people and enhance their work as professionals and entrepreneurs.

AWIB celebrated the end of the season at its Annual Holiday Party.  Lots of food, wine, interesting conversation and good cheer flowed as we greeted new and existing friends.  As is our tradition, we conducted a raffle of spas, dinners, and wine tastings to end the evening on a high note.  We thank all of members and friends for joining us as we toasted the end of a good year and the start of 2011. View the photos from the party.

The 2010 Asian Women In Business Leadership Awards Dinner, Fifteenth Anniversary Gala was a memorable evening where AWIB celebrated our "Crystal" anniversary along with the great achievement of Asian women as corporate executives and entrepreneurs. This was yet another successful annual dinner for AWIB, which may be credited to the wonderful corporate sponsors, as well as, the inspiring presentations of the award winners and the professional execution of the event.   The 2010 AWIB Corporate Leadership Award was given to Esther Lee, Senior VP, Brand Marketing and Advertising at AT&T, and Ranjini Pillay, Chief Underwriting Officer, Risk Finance at Chartis Insurance.  Winners of the 2010 AWIB Entrepreneurial Leadership Award are Keiko Ono Aoki, Chairman and CEO of Benihana of Tokyo, Inc.,  Michelle S. Lee, President and CEO of STG International, Inc., Selina Lo, President and CEO of Ruckus Wireless Liu Tee Shu, Owner and Chairperson of Shu Enterprise Group.   AWIB is proud to honor these women who come from a cross section of industries. From Keiko Ono Aoki's restaurant franchisor to Selina Lo's new class of technology company, they exemplify what hard work and determination can achieve.  AWIB's first live auction was a success with auctioneer Henry Howard-Sneyd of Sotheby's generating excitement and humor during bidding for once in a lifetime opportunities, such as Breakfast at Tiffany's.

The extensive silent auction, which ran the gamut from dinner certificates, luxury handbags, to antique kimonos, was a highlight for many attendees, as they anxiously watched their bids, knowing that winning also means supporting AWIB. With the grand prize of four round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines for the raffle draw, the evening ended on a high note. As always, AWIB had numerous sponsors and a long list of raffle and silent auction donors.  View the Gala invitation and photos.

AWIB members and supporters helped kick off the Fall season at the Fendi flagship store on Fifth Avenue.  This was the second year we enjoyed the hospitality of Fendi - Champagne reception, networking, music and lots of shopping. This event was also a pre-Gala reception to celebrate our 15th Anniversary and to thank our members and sponsors for their continued support. Despite the mini-tornados hitting the tri-state area that evening, over 100 people showed up to participate in this very glamorous and friendly event. To top it off, they received 10% off their purchases and AWIB received a donation from Fendi of 10% of the proceeds. View the invitation and pictures from the reception.

AWIB’s inaugural film event at Bennett Media Studios was a blockbuster hit. The topic of the evening was the changing role and depiction of Asian Women in Hollywood over the years. The night began with a viewing of a short documentary featuring three Asian women performers trying to make it in Hollywood and maintain their cultural identity and unique voice. The panel consisted of Asian women in the entertainment industry.  They were: Tina Chen (actress), Karin Chien (producer), Christine Choy (Professor and former head of the Kanbar Institute of Film & TV at NYU), Bertha Bay-Sa Pan (director), and Sekka Scher (manager); the moderator was Elena Creef (Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at Wellesley College).  The panelists sought to address any shifts in mainstream media’s portrayal and treatment of Asians. The audience was encouraged to vocalize opinions and engage the panelists in a spirited debate which confirmed the prevalent viewpoint that the progress of the treatment of Asians in Hollywood is still debatable. Saigon Uncorked - a multi-course Vietnamese food and wine pairing was a delicious success.  Elisa Kwon, the evening's elegant sommelier, navigated the pairing of 7 courses and 7 wines and enhanced our enjoyment of the evening's fare.  We started our adventure with the pop of a champagne (a wonderful Louis Roederer) and new friends were made over a shared interest in food and wine.  Attendees left with smiles on their faces and a party favor of a diamond wine stopper to end the night with a bit of sparkle.

AWIB’s Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference for Minority/Women-owned Businesses was an eventful day offering a wealth of information to business owners looking for B2B networking opportunities, corporate procurement, and learning how best to win government contracts.  Attendees had a full day.  They participated in workshops, networked with exhibitors and other business owners and learned how programs for MWBEs can help them grow their businesses. Those who submitted pre-qualifications forms had private matchmaking appointments with corporate buyers.

Conference Highlights:
The day kicked-off with opening remarks from AWIB’s President, Bonnie Wong followed by a presentation and discussion with the keynote speaker, Pravina Raghavan, NY District Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration. The subsequent sessions, “Selling to the Federal Government,” “Opportunities with Regional Authorities and New Jersey,” “Winning Contracts in New York; the State and City” and “Doing Business with Corporate America” were tailored to educate workshop participants on programs helpful to minority and women owned businesses.

Additionally, exhibitors shared critical information about procurement opportunities to attendees. Prequalified business owners had the rare opportunity to participate in corporate matchmaking where they met with corporations to discuss potential procurement opportunities; the one-on-one private meetings enabled business owners to discuss their products or services with corporations, a good first step towards gaining potential business opportunities. The 18 participating matchmakers included: AIG, AT&T, Battery Park City Authority, Beyer, Blinder & Belle, Bloomingdales, BNY Mellon, CBS Corporation, Colgate-Palmolive, Enterprise Holdings, Horizon Healthcare Services Inc., Marsh & McLennan Companies, MTV Networks, NBC Universal, PepsiCo Inc., Prudential Financial, Siemens, Tishman Construction, and University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey.

AWIB would like to thank BNY Mellon for its generous support of this event. For more information about AWIB’s Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference, please feel free to read about the participants and agenda, review the brochure and view the Pictures taken the day of the event.
